Short Biography of Saint Niceforus the Leper

AgiosNikiforos2_06
Our holy father St. Niceforus the Leper, whose name wold name was Nicholas Tzanakakis, was born in 1890 in the village Sirikari near Chania, Crete. At a very early age, he lost both his parents. When he became thirteen his grandfather sent him to work at a barber shop in Chania. He was quite popular among those who met him there, as he was a smart, handsome, and very sociable boy.

However, life held for him a very painful and difficult trial, which begun with the first spots of the Hansen’ s disease, mostly known as leprosy, a contagious -in people’ s minds- and fatal illness at that time.

At the age of sixteen, when the marks of the sickness became more apparent, fearing that the local authorities might send him to the dry island of Spinalonga, a place of isolation for the lepers back then, he fled to Alexandria. To make a living he got a job at a barber shop. Being social and very lovable, he got acquainted with the flourishing Greek community and the clergy of  the Patriarchate.

As years passed, the marks of leprosy became constantly more and more apparent, even more intense, especially in his hands and face. Once more he  had to leave. But go where? He knew no one, nowhere. He entrusted his painful problem to a Bishop of the throne of Alexandria. That blessed man decided to help him and wrote to Holy father Anthimos, – later on named a saint of the Church – who was a priest at the leper colony of Chios, requesting to accept him there. He responded immediately; young Nicholas would be welcome there. After three years, father Anthimos, his spiritual father by then, tonsured him a monk with the name of Niceforus. Under his paternal guidance, the young monk reached highly in all virtues.

In 1957, when the leper hospital was closed, father Anthimos sent father Niceforus to the Anti-leper Station of St. Barbara in Athens with a letter of recommendation addressed to father Eumenios, who served there as a priest. He urged him to “take good care of the treasure our holy Virgin Mary is sending you” as he was to benefit greatly from him. And so it happened; father Niceforus spent the rest of his life there, with father Eumenios faithfully serving him in all his needs with deep respect and love, as his spiritual father.

Our holy father Niceforus reposed in the Lord on January 4th, 1964,  two days before Epiphany day.

During his life he performed  miracles, and is many more after his dormition, according to numerous witnesses.
